Before you come into Hospital

Pre-assessment clinics

Before coming into Hospital you may be asked to attend a pre-assessment clinic. You will see a doctor or nurse who will assess your condition. Investigations, such as blood tests and X-rays, may be done at the same time. This is also an opportunity to ask questions and discuss any special needs.

Things to consider before you come into Hospital

If you cannot attend the appointment/admission date offered for any reason, please let us know as soon as possible so that it can be offered to another patient. Please use the contact number on your letter or telephone the Hospital and ask for your ward/clinic.

  • Please read your admission letter carefully as it will tell you what to do before you come into Hospital. Please follow the information carefully, or your treatment may be delayed. If you are unsure about the timing of your last food and drink, or about taking any medication, please contact your Ward.
  • Please be ready to answer questions about: Your medical history; any allergies/reactions you have; and any medications you are taking. Your admissions letter will tell you if you need to bring anything with you.
  • Talk to your family or close friends about your healthcare and what you want to happen. They will then be able to speak for you if you are unable to.
  • If you are receiving benefits, you may need to notify your local Department of Works and Pensions office before you come into Hospital. For advice: Telephone the Benefit Enquiry Line on Freephone 0800 882 200.
  • If you need a Medical Certificate for your employer, please speak to the ward staff.
  • If you have help from Social Services such as meals on wheels, home help, or home alert, please remember to tell them you are coming into Hospital.
  • You may wish to write down any questions you need answering
