What to do to help yourself in an emergency

What can you do to help yourself and others in emergencies?

If you were to find yourself in the middle of a major incident, your natural instincts would usually tell you what to do.

However, it is important to remember:

  • Think before acting
  • Ensure that 999 have been called, if people are injured or if there is a threat to life, but do not put yourself or others in danger!
  • Follow the advice of the emergency services and try to remain calm
  • Check for injuries and remember to help yourself before attempting to help and reassure others

If you are not involved in the incident, but are close by or believe you may be in danger, in most cases the advice is to:

  • Go inside a safe building and stay inside until you are advised to do otherwise
  • Tune in to local radio or TV for more information

What else can you do to help yourself?

ICE is a program that enables emergency responders, such as paramedics, firefighters, police and hospital personnel to contact the next of kin of the owner of a mobile phone to obtain important medical or support information (the phone must be unlocked and working).

The ICE program was conceived and promoted by British paramedic in 2005. ICE is simple - just enter an emergency contacts or next of kin in your mobile phone address book and name them ICE. Alternatively, a person can list multiple emergency contacts as ICE1, ICE2, ICE3, etc.

It has become routine for emergency responders to look for the abbreviation ICE when a mobile phone is found on an unconscious person.

The popularity of the ICE program has spread across Europe and Australia, and it has started to grow in the USA.
