Award-winning maternity team speak to 1,500 at major conference
23 May 2014

After winning a major national award, two of Burton Hospital NHS Foundation Trust’s top maternity team were invited to speak at Europe’s leading event for primary, community and public health care teams.

Sharon Wallis, Head of Midwifery, and Helen Hurst, Matron for maternity inpatients, drew a crowd of 1,500 when they gave a presentation on the second and final day of the Primary Care and Public Health 2014 conference at Birmingham’s NEC (Thurs May 22). The event included a major exhibition plus simultaneous talks from experts and specialists in 16 halls and rooms.

Helen said: “We were overwhelmed by the number of people that came to listen to us.  We thought we might get about 500 people, but they kept coming until all the seats in Hall 6 were full and people were standing at the back. We were told afterwards the audience was 1,500-strong.”

Sharon and Helen told the delegates - who included midwives, health visitors and other public health workers - how the Excellence in Maternity Care award was decided based on patient feedback and  independent analysis of the safety, quality and effectiveness of the care offered to mums-to-be and new mums.

The award reflected the high standards achieved at both Queen’s Hospital, Burton, and the midwife-led birthing unit at Samuel Johnson Community Hospital, Lichfield.

The presentation by Sharon and Helen covered the personalised, individual care the team offers and an innovative enhanced recovery package that helps women who have had elective caesarean births return to normal as quickly as possible.

Helen said: “We took the delegates through two patient journeys showing how the multidisciplinary teamwork we have developed helps women have the birth they want – and how we handle situations when emergencies arise. There were lots of questions and discussions at the end and people were still wanting to talk to us later in the morning.”

The Excellence in Maternity Care award was organised by CHKS, the UK’s leading independent provider of healthcare intelligence and quality improvement. It judged the quality of care at Burton Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust to be the best out of 148 NHS maternity providers in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
