A NURSE at Burton’s Queen’s Hospital has been nominated for a prestigious national award for her work in raising awareness of prostate cancer in the community.
Sarah Minns, a Urology Advanced Nurse Practitioner, has been shortlisted in the Community Nursing Award at the Royal College of Nursing Nurse Awards 2017.

Sarah is one of five nurses from across the country shortlisted for the award for her work promoting awareness of prostate cancer at the Trust. Burton Hospitals has worked closely with Burton Albion Community Trust to hold screening sessions for men over 50 over the past year as well as setting up a support group for patients who have been diagnosed with the condition.

“I was in complete shock when I found out,” said Sarah, who was nominated for the award by Consultant Urologist Miss Jyoti Shah. “It’s a fantastic honour to be shortlisted – not just for myself but for the Trust as a whole.

“It will take a while just to take it all in. I’m extremely proud of the work we as a team have done around raising awareness of prostate cancer and it’s nice that we have had this recognition.”

Sarah will now travel to London to present the Trust’s work to a panel of judges before finding out whether she has won the prestigious honour at a glittering awards ceremony at the Westminster Park Plaza on Friday 5 May 2017.

Miss Shah, who nominated Sarah, said: “Sarah works tirelessly to provide the very best possible care for our urology patients and it’s fantastic that her hard work has been rewarded. We are all incredibly proud of her.”

Paula Gardner, Chief Nurse, added: “The work Sarah and the team have done in raising awareness of prostate cancer has been exceptional. I’m delighted for her and would like to wish her good luck for the awards night.

“Sarah puts the care of her patients first and demonstrates brilliantly the Trust’s PRIDE values of passion, respect, innovation, determination and excellence on a daily basis.”
