What is Foundation Trust Membership?

It couldn’t be simpler to become a member of Burton Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, which includes Queen’s Hospital and the Treatment Centre,Samuel Johnson Community Hospital in Lichfield and Sir Robert Peel Community Hospital in Tamworth.  

Whether you are a patient, a local resident or one of our 3,100 staff, you have a stake in your local hospital – and your opinions and involvement really matter to us.  Visit the Patient and Public Involvement website to learn more about getting involved. 

Membership is free of charge.  It is simple to apply on line , by using the Membership Form which can be found around the hospital, email membership@burtonft.nhs.uk or telephone 01283 511511 Ext 5711 and we will send you a form.    

You can do as little or as much as you like! 

If I sign up, what happens next! 

We have many different ways members can work with us: 

As an Informed Member, you’ll: 

  • Receive a regular newsletter, Foundation Focus , on current issues, developments and members events happening at your local hospital
  • Be advised of public meetings, membership events and vote in Governor elections


As an Involved Member, you’ll:

  • Be able to assist with patient surveys, focus groups and consultations on future developments and services (Patient and Public Involvement)
  • Volunteer, support events or even stand as Governor to represent the people in your community
  • Attend member events

What is in it for me?

 Members have the opportunity to influence and challenge the way our hospital develops and its healthcare services.

 Members receive newsletters providing updates on Trust services, facilities, developments and member events. 

  • Members qualify for local and national company discounts as part of the NHS scheme. 
  • Be able to vote in elections for Governors and 
  • Stand for election as a Governor (if over 18)

What are the types of Member? 

Our members are grouped into two constituencies; Public and Staff 

Public Members

To be eligible for membership Public Members must be over 16 and live within the areas covered by the:

  • East StaffordshireBorough Council
  • South Derbyshire District Council
  • Lichfield District andTamworthBorough Councils
  • North West Leicestershire District Council

Public constituency boundaries are based on the borough and district council areas.


Staff Members

All existing staff automatically became Members unless they chose to opt out of membership. All staff groups are given an equal opportunity to participate.

To qualify as a staff Member, you must either:

  • have a contract of employment that does not have a fixed term, or
  • have a contract of employment with a fixed term of at least 12 months, or
  • have been employed continuously by our Trust for 12 months, or
  • have exercised functions for the purposes of Burton Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust for at least a year.
