Paediatrics Department

Referral Guidelines

Referrals are accepted for a wide variety of paediatric conditions.  Commoner referral categories are listed below.

Respiratory
            Chesty children
            Persistent coughing
            Asthma
            Breathlessness
            Chest pain

Cardiology
            Palpitations
            Fainting episodes
            Heart murmurs

Neurology
            Seizures (generally to rapid access clinic)
            Abnormal movements
            Headaches
            Neurodevelopmental concerns (initial assessment for diagnosis)
            (long term management by local community paediatric team)

GI
            Abdominal pain
            Constipation
            Chronic Diarrhoea
            Recurrent vomiting/reflux
            Coeliac disease (to Dr Ahmed)
            PR Bleeding

Renal
            UTI
            Haematuria

Metabolic
            Jaundice (early to ward, prolonged to rapid access clinic)
            Diabetes (new diagnosis   - generally to ward as urgent admissions
                                                             - established to Dr Samuel)

Growth
            Failure to thrive (general or rapid access clinic depending upon urgency)
            Short stature
            Delayed puberty
            Precocious puberty

Allergies
            Urticarial/anaphylactic reactions
            Hayfever/rhinitis
            Seasonal Asthma
            (NB Eczema should be referred to dermatology – Dr Cartwright/Dr Nelson)
            MMR vaccination (egg allergy is not a contraindication to MMR vaccination)

Musculoskeletal
            Joint pain

Surgical Problems
            Hernias/Hydroceles
            Clicky hips
            Hypospadias
            Umbilical hernias (no need for referral)

Behaviour problems should generally be referred to the local CAMHS team unless a specific medical cause needs to be excluded.
