Has someone at the Trust made you feel special?

We want our patients, visitors and staff to have the best possible experience at Burton Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. You deserve to be treated with courtesy, care and respect. But little things can make a big difference – a helping hand just when you need it, a sympathetic ear, a calming presence, a clear explanation, a smiling face. “She asked questions about my condition no one else had ... It was an awesome feeling.” If someone at the Trust has made you feel special, why not nominate them for our GEM (Going the Extra Mile) awards?

Why are GEM awards important?

It’s a chance to let extra special people know they’re really appreciated. Being nominated encourages them to keep doing an excellent job. And if you tell us what special people do to improve your experiences at the Trust, we can try to make sure it happens all the time, in all our services. So please take a few minutes to submit a nomination.

Who do you want to nominate?

You can nominate anyone from Burton Hospitals Foundation NHS Trust. This covers Queen’s Hospital and the Treatment Centre in Burton-upon-Trent, Samuel Johnson Community Hospital in Lichfield and Sir Robert Peel Community Hospital in Tamworth. It doesn’t matter where the person works (they could visit you at home or be based in the community), what their role is (they could be a volunteer or work behind the scenes) or how you’ve come into contact with them (they could be a colleague or someone you’ve only spoken to on the phone). They can be an individual member of a team that’s done a good job altogether. What matters is that they said or did something that made you feel especially good or impressed you.

But your nomination must:

  • relate to something that happened within the last three months
  • be based on you or your family’s personal experience
  • give the judges enough detail to decide on a winner – no more than four people a quarter (16 a year) will receive a GEM award, so they need to be extra special.

Here’s how some people at the Trust have already made a difference. “He was able to make me laugh – that does not happen often prior to surgery, I imagine.” “He explained everything about my condition … when I left his room I felt that I knew as much as there was to know.” “He made my father feel that he really cared about him. My father still talks about the visit now.” “I entered X-ray feeling fine; I left it feeling wonderful. Even before I was given my result I had a real feel good factor about my experience.”
