Council of Governors Information

The successful management of the Burton Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is the responsibility of its Board of Directors working together with the Council of Governors. The interests of our Members and the many partner organisations with which we work locally will be represented by the Council.

The Council of Governors is made up of public and staff Members together with people appointed to represent the interests of local partner organisations (i.e. primary care trusts, local authorities, college, commerce and voluntary services.)

Period of office

Public Governors are eligible to serve for a period of three years and to stand for re-election, subject to a maximum of nine years in total.

Staff Governors also serve for a period of three years. The Council of Governors meet at least six times a year. The meetings are open to the public unless the Governors decide otherwise for reasons of propriety.

Could you be a Governor?

Being a Governor, rather than just a Member, enables local residents, patients, staff and representatives of partner organisations to have more say in the actual running of the Hospital. The Council of Governors represents the interests of Members and partner organisations in the governance of the NHS Foundation Trust.

As an NHS Foundation Trust, we need the best possible people to provide support as Governors and ensure that the Trust is a success.

Supporting our Governors

The majority of the Hospital Governors are elected by Public Members. We appreciate that Governors may require support in this role, enabling them to represent the views of the population served by the trust. We believe that the Trust benefits most from appropriately skilled individuals who are practised in stakeholder engagement, consultation and participation and work with our Governors to develop the required skills and roles, helping them to understand the functions, authority and legal responsibilities of an NHS Foundation Trust.

Appointment and election principles

In all matters relating to the governance of the Trust, the principles of openness and transparency apply. The Electoral Reform Services manage the election process on our behalf.
