How to obtain an appointment

  • Patients with Chronic Kidney Disease are identified by their GP and referred to the Renal Clinic in the Outpatient Department at the Samuel Johnson Hospital.

  • All patients suitable for dialysis at the satellite unit are identified at the monthly pre-dialysis clinic in the OPD at the Samuel Johnson Hospital. A Consultant Nephrologist, a Pre-dialysis Nurse Specialist from Birmingham Heartlands Hospital and the Renal Unit Dietician are in attendance at this clinic.

  • Referrals are also accepted directly by the Renal Unit Manager, from the Regional Dialysis Units for local patients who are receiving their treatment in Birmingham, Derby and Coventry.

  • Once End Stage Renal Failure has been diagnosed, dialysis commences at the Acute Regional Dialysis Unit. Patients are placed on a waiting list and transferred to the satellite unit at Samuel Johnson Hospital when a “dialysis slot” becomes available.
