Minor Injuries Unit - Sir Robert Peel

As of April 4th 2016 the Minor Injuries Unit based within Sir Robert Peel Community Hospital is a nurse-led service open 8am to 10pm 7 days per week for those suffering from minor injuries or minor illnesses – and no appointments are necessary.

Patients are assessed, diagnosed, treated and discharged by highly experienced Emergency Nurse Practitioners (ENPs).  There is no on-site Doctor or GP within the unit

Patients may be re-directed to their GP, or to Accident and Emergency, if that would be the best and most appropriate healthcare for their condition.

The nursing staff have access to X-ray facilities during X-ray opening times for agreed, appropriate referrals.

Key features of the Minor Injuries Unit

It is open 8am to 10pm 7 days per week

Access to X-ray facilities is 9 am till 5 pm on Monday to Friday and 9am till noon on Saturdays. ENPs canXx-ray limbs under agreed protocols in patients aged two years upwards.

ENPs are trained to treat minor fractures and in the application of casts. Nursing  staff are not trained in the manipulation of serious deformities.

Patients mainly self-refer to the unit but can be referred by other health care professionals such as doctors, practice nurses, radiographers, health visitors and school nurses.

All MIU staff believe patients and carers have a right to timely attention dependent on their needs

ENPs offer patient–centred care for patients presenting with undiagnosed injury or illness. Once assessed a plan of care is decided which could include further treatment, discharge or referral to other health care providers.

Nursing staff can assess and treat a variety of eye injuries and complaints.

The ENP can treat patients with a variety of minor illness, if required, using locally-agreed Patient Group Directions (PGDs).

The MIU has six independent Nurse Prescribers.

Telephone triage and advice is given.

There is a policy in place to receive ambulances but this is at the discretion of the nurse in charge.

The Minor Injuries Staff are able to refer patients to other health care providers including district nurses, health visitors, the Community Intervention Team, physiotherapists and the Community Falls team.

Nurses are regularly updating their skills and follow a programme of continuing professional development.

Information regarding your attendance at the Minor Injuries Units is shared with your GP, your health visitor and school nurse.
