Minor Injuries Unit - Samuel Johnson

As of April 4th 2016 the Minor Injuries Unit based within Samuel Johnson Community Hospital is nurse-led service open 8am to 9pm 7 days per week.

It provides help for patients with minor injuries or minor illness who can attend without an appointment and are assessed, diagnosed, treated and discharged by highly experienced Emergency Nurse Practitioners (ENP).

There is no on-site Doctor within the unit but it is supported by local GPs who attend planned sessions Monday to Friday.

Patients may be re-directed to their GP, or to Accident and Emergency, if that would be the best and most appropriate healthcare for their condition.

The nursing staff have access to X-ray facilities during X-ray opening times for agreed, appropriate referrals.

Key features of the Minor Injuries Unit

The unit is open 8am to 9pm 7 days per week.

Access to X-ray facilities is 9 am till 5 pm Monday to Friday and 9am till midday on Saturdays. ENPs can X-ray limbs under agreed protocols in patients aged  two years and older.

All MIU staff believe patients and carers have a right to timely attention dependent on their needs

ENPs offer patient –centred care for patients presenting with undiagnosed injury or illness. Once assessed a plan of care is decided which could include further treatment, discharge or referral to other health care providers.

Nursing staff can assess and treat a variety of eye injuries and complaints.

The ENP can treat patients with a variety of minor illness if required using locally agreed Patient Group Directions (PGDs).

The MIU has three independent Nurse Prescribers.

Telephone triage and advice is given .

There is a policy in place to receive ambulances but this is at the discretion of the nurse in charge.

Staff are able to refer patients to other health care providers including district nurses, health visitors, the community intervention team, physiotherapists and the community falls team.
