Midwifery services

Maternity services at Burton NHS Foundation Trust includes inpatient and out patient services. This is provided at both Queen’s site and Samuel Johnson and also community Midwifery. We care for almost 4000 women and their babies per year, and cover a wide geographical area, including parts ofSouth Derbyshire, Leicestershire as well as Staffordshire.


Maternity services are provided on the Queen’s site on the first floor of the main building, on Delivery Suite, Antenatal Clinic and the Andressey Suite

Samuel Johnson Midwife Led Unit is based inLichfield

Community Midwives are based in GP Surgeries and Children’s centres

The service provides care for women antenatally, during the intra partum period and in the post natal period

  • Booking visits
  • Antenatal screening
  • Consultant and midwife clinics
  • Midwife led care
  • Water birth
  • High and low risk care in labour
  • Postnatal clinics, both appointment and drop in
  • Infant feeding support based on UNICEF baby friendly
  • A debriefing service
  • Access to a Supervisor of Midwives at all times

 How to obtain an appointment

Women are given appointments based on their individual client need, and these will be either in the community setting or in the hospital antenatal clinics. The antenatal pathway is based on NICE guidance and individual need. 

Postnatally, the initial home visit is generated following transfer home from hospital and will then be negotiated between the new mother and her community midwife.
