Maxillo-facial services

About our service

Oral and Maxillofacial surgery is unique in requiring a dual qualification in medicine and dentistry. It is often seen as the bridge between medicine and dentistry, treating conditions that require expertise from both backgrounds such as head and neck cancers, salivary gland diseases, facial trauma, facial disproportion, temporomandibular joint disorders, impacted teeth, cysts and tumours of the jaws as well as numerous problems affecting the oral mucosa such as mouth ulcers and infections.

The consultant team works both at Queen's Hospital and the Royal Derby Hospital and offers a comprehensive service including:

  • Head and neck malignancy and reconstructive surgery
  • Facial disproportion surgery
  • Facial trauma including fractures of facial bones & soft tissue injuries
  • Salivary gland surgery for both benign and malignant disease
  • Facial soft tissue surgery including moles, sebaceous cysts, basal cell carcinomas, squamous cell carcinomas.
  • Dento-alveolar surgery
  • Oral soft tissue surgery
  • Temporomandibular (jaw) joint disorders
  • Management of facial pain

Outpatient clinics, local anaesthetic and day case surgery is undertaken on site at the Queen's Hospital. More major surgery requiring inpatient facilities is undertaken at Royal Derby Hospital.
