Emergency Department Physiotherapy Clinic

A physiotherapy clinic is held in the Emergency Department (ED) so that people with acute injuries can be given immediate advice and treatment. This clinic is particularly for people who present to the ED with acute musculoskeletal injuries such as sprained ankles, soft tissue injuries, acute back pain and sports injuries. The treatment aims to help ease the symptoms, reduce the recovery time and prevent recurrence. Follow-up physiotherapy is arranged in the ED if necessary. The ED physiotherapist works very closely with the Consultants, doctors and nurses in the Emergency department and further assessment with them will be arranged by the physio if this becomes necessary. Investigations such as X-Rays and blood tests can be organised quickly and easily. Referral to the ED physio can be made by the Doctors and Nurse Practitioners if you attend out of the normal physiotherapy clinic hours. You may also be referred to the out-patient physiotherapy department if ongoing treatment is required.
